What is Parley?
Parley is an AI-powered language learning app that helps you master new languages through natural conversations. Unlike traditional language apps that focus on memorization, Parley engages you in realistic dialogues, provides instant feedback, and adapts to your learning style and interests.
How do I get started with Parley?
Getting started is easy! Download Parley from the App Store or Google Play, create a free account (or continue as a guest), select the language you want to learn, choose your current proficiency level, and start your first conversation. The app will guide you through each step.
Which languages can I learn with Parley?
Parley currently supports 11 languages: English (UK & US), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, and Hungarian. Each language can be used as both your native language and learning language, with culturally appropriate conversation styles and native-speaker voices.
Do I need any prior knowledge to start learning?
No! Parley is designed for learners at all levels, from complete beginners (A0) to advanced speakers (C2). During setup, you'll select your current proficiency level, and Parley will adapt all conversations to match your abilities.
Using Parley
How do conversations work?
Conversations in Parley feel like chatting with a native speaker. You can type or speak your responses, and our AI will respond naturally while gently correcting any mistakes. Each conversation builds on previous ones, creating a continuous learning experience tailored to your interests and goals.
What are checkpoints and how do they help?
Checkpoints are periodic assessments that analyze your conversations to identify strengths and areas for improvement. After having at least 5 exchanges in a conversation, you can run a checkpoint to receive detailed feedback, personalized recommendations, and focus areas for future learning. You're limited to one checkpoint per conversation to encourage meaningful practice.
Can I use both voice and text?
Yes! Parley supports both voice and text input. You can switch between them anytime based on your preference or environment. Voice mode helps with pronunciation and speaking confidence, while text mode is perfect for quiet environments or focusing on written skills.
How does Parley correct my mistakes?
Parley provides gentle, contextual corrections without interrupting the flow of conversation. When you make a mistake, you'll see the correct form along with a brief explanation. You can also tap on corrections to see more detailed grammar explanations or alternative phrasings.
Can I choose conversation topics?
Absolutely! Parley adapts to your interests. You can steer conversations toward topics you enjoy, whether that's travel, food, technology, or daily life. The AI will suggest relevant vocabulary and phrases while keeping the dialogue engaging and educational.
Subscription & Billing
What's included in the free intro plan?
The intro plan includes 5000 tokens, it is not a monthly recurring plan. After you have used the tokens you are required to change to a paid monthly plan. It includes all of the features. It is only intended as an introduction to the application.
What do the paid plans offer?
Our paid plans start at $14.99/month (Starter) and go up to $79.99/month (Elite). All plans include full access to all features: voice and text conversations, grammar feedback, checkpoint analysis, and all 17 language pairs. Higher tiers offer increased token limits for more intensive practice and advanced learning analytics.
Can I cancel my subscription anytime?
Yes, you can cancel your subscription at any time. To cancel:
iOS: Go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → Parley
Android: Open Google Play Store → Menu → Subscriptions → Parley
Your subscription will remain active until the end of the current billing period, after which it won't renew.
Do you offer refunds?
Refunds are handled through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store according to their policies. To request a refund:

How do I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
You can change your subscription plan anytime through the Parley app by going to Settings → Subscription. Select your new plan and confirm. When upgrading, the change takes effect immediately and you'll be charged a prorated amount. When downgrading, the change takes effect at the end of your current billing period.
AI Technology
How does Parley's AI technology work?
Parley uses advanced artificial intelligence and natural language processing to create conversational language learning experiences. The AI is trained on diverse language patterns and pedagogical best practices to provide personalized instruction, grammar feedback, and contextual responses that adapt to your learning level and interests.
Is the AI's feedback always accurate?
While the AI provides highly accurate language feedback most of the time, like all AI systems, it may occasionally make mistakes or provide unexpected responses. We recommend using Parley as part of a broader language learning program that includes other resources like textbooks, classes, or language exchange partners for the most comprehensive learning experience.
How should I use Parley for the best results?
For optimal results, we recommend using Parley regularly as one component of your language learning journey. Practice conversations consistently, review the feedback provided, and combine Parley sessions with other learning methods like reading, formal classes, or speaking with native speakers. If you notice any unusual responses, feel free to verify information through additional resources.
Technical Questions
What devices does Parley support?
Parley is supported on iOS and Android.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, Parley requires an internet connection for conversations since we use cloud-based AI for real-time language processing. However, you can review past conversations offline. We're working on offline mode for Premium subscribers.
Can I use Parley on multiple devices?
Parley accounts can be deleted in the app itself. Parley is not usable on multiple devices - we use device-based sharing linked to your account. If you try to use Parley on a different device, a message will pop up asking you to switch your account to the current device.
Privacy
Can I delete my account and data?
Yes, you can delete your account at any time at the bottom of the settings page.
Troubleshooting
The app isn't recognizing my voice correctly. What should I do?
Try these steps: 1) Ensure you're in a quiet environment, 2) Speak clearly and at a normal pace, 3) Check that you've granted microphone permissions, 4) Try restarting the app. If issues persist, you can use text input or contact support for assistance.
I'm not receiving corrections for my mistakes. Why?
Check your settings to ensure grammar feedback is enabled. Also, Parley balances correction with conversation flow - it won't correct every minor error to avoid disrupting natural dialogue. For more detailed feedback, run a checkpoint analysis.
The app is running slowly or crashing. What can I do?
First, ensure you have a stable internet connection. Try closing and reopening the app, or restart your device. Make sure you're running the latest version of Parley. Check the build version and service status in your app settings. If problems persist, contact support@parleyai.nl with a screenshot of your build version and service status, along with details about your device and the issue.
